IV7 Vehicle Mount RFID Reader

RFID has always delivered the twin conveniences of hands-free scanning with little or no human intervention. Now, Intermec has taken that to the next level by adding the convenience of mobility with the new IV7 Vehicle Mount RFID reader. The IV7 joins an award winning family of readers that include several handheld and fixed mount form factors.

As Intermec’s first packaged forklift-mounted RFID reader system, the IV7 is designed for serial attachment to the Intermec® CV60 vehicle mount computer. Both are built to withstand the rigors of harsh, industrial environments and are sealed to IP65 ratings. The CV60, acting as the local host for the IV7, provides network management and security. The built-in DC-DC converter handles the noisy input power environment.

RFID standards are continuing to evolve, which requires manufacturers and retailers to have multi-protocol reading capability if they are implementing RFID in an open supply chain. When fully equipped, the IV7 can read multiple air interface protocols, even in mixed populations of tags, including EPC UHF Generation 2 (Gen 2), ISO 18000 6-b and EPC Class 1.

While portal mounted readers are capable of capturing pallet data and some carton data, the tagged items must be brought to the reader. Enterprises often need the flexibility to read RFID tags in certain and not-so-certain locations which may not be near the location of a fixed reader. The IV7 not only delivers the flexibility of “read where you need,” but also a cost advantage over portal reader systems wherever the number of dock doors is significantly larger than the number of fork trucks.

Commercial and government supply chains will find the IV7 ideal for pick and put away applications. The CV60 can command the IV7, equipped with a location tag-sensing antenna, to scan for RFID tags when a pallet is picked up. The IV7 captures not only the location of the pallet pick up, but also through what doorway it passed, the path the forklift traveled and where the pallet will be placed.

The wireless capability of the CV60 combined with the snappy reads of the IV7 mean that warehouse management systems are automatically updated with location status as the truck moves through tag-equipped zones, as well as with shelf location data when the pallet is dropped off or retrieved.

The IV7’s cast aluminum housing has built-in cable strain relief features, and with pre-drilled holes in the base plate, is designed for either U-bolt or flexible strap attachment to many makes of fork trucks. The IV7 can be mounted in any position on the vehicle within 3.5 m (10 ft.) of the vehicle battery or power source such as a terminal strip. The communication to the CV60 is via RS232 cable and connection.

IP4 Portable RFID Reader

Intermec’s expertise in real-world RFID implementations, combined with its knowledge about building rugged handheld devices, is reflected in the IP4 reader, an accessory handle for attachment to the popular Intermec® 700 Series Color mobile computers.

The IP4 delivers first-of-its-kind capability by combining the power of a handheld mobile computing device equipped with PAN, LAN and WAN radios as well as a multi-protocol RFID radio that can be used worldwide.

Users of the 700 Series Color mobile computers have posted productivity gains and enjoyed application flexibility enabled by the three radios— personal area (PAN) or *Bluetooth™, local area (LAN) and wide area (WAN)— as well as the area and linear imagers integrated into the handheld device. Combining those capabilities with the IP4 and the strength of the Microsoft® Pocket PC platform gives users a high performance mobile RFID solution.

With an RFID radio that is software configurable, the IP4 can function in a multi-protocol environment that includes current ISO 18000-6b, EPC UHF Generation 2 (Gen 2) and ISO 18000-6c standards.
While unmanned RFID data capture solutions are designed to eliminate human intervention and line of sight restrictions in data collection applications, there is always a need for exception-based scanning. The IP4 and 700 Series in tandem deliver a truly mobile RFID solution. It allows the user to take the technology to the work— whether it’s on the shop floor, the store floor or the receiving dock, whenever it’s more practical to bring the read/write device to the tagged object rather than moving tagged objects passed a fixed reader.

The IP4 allows users to take full advantage of the distributed mobile data carrier capability inherent in Gen 2 and upcoming ISO 18000-6c tags. With the IP4, data such as origin, destination, “use by” date, warranty, service or repair history can be easily updated on the tag and therefore always traveling with the tagged item. The mobility and convenient size of the IP4 allows users to update tag data on items during work-in-process tasks without leaving their workstation.

Like all Intermec products, the durability and ergonomics required for rugged mobile computing are designed into every aspect of the IP4. The snap-on, high-impact plastic and magnesium trigger handle reader comes packaged with its own rechargeable battery pack for a full shift’s worth of work.

The IP4 is ready for integration into supply chain management for retail operations, industrial manufacturing, and logistics applications.

The IP4 is available in the RFID UHF frequency band, and will not interfere with industry standard PAN, LAN or WAN transmissions occurring in the mobile data collection environment.

IF5 Fixed RFID Reader

Joining an already diversified line of RFID readers, the Intermec IF5 is a fixed “smart” reader that filters information from tags, monitors external sensors and controls audible/visual indicators, without the expense, and potential point of failure of a separate server “box”, required by other RFID scanning solutions. As with all Intermec reader products, the IF5 both reads and writes to RFID tags.

Filtering Information

Filtering incoming tag data means sending only pertinent information upstream to the host. The IF5 filters, manages and acts upon the data read from tags according to application parameters, all made possible by internal Java or Java Script applications. The Java application can also be programmed to change the configuration parameters of the IF5 in response to new incoming data from a tag or peripheral device. For example, a dock door portal – mounted IF5 reader can be programmed to scan the “destination” field on all tags passing through, and subsequently flash a red beacon light for the fork lift driver if an item is about to be incorrectly loaded.

Monitor Sensors/Visual Indicators

The IF5 reader includes powered general purpose input/output (GPIO) circuitry, which allows direct monitoring and/or controlling of peripherals such as presence detectors and signal lights without requiring extra devices and power supplies to facilitate the connection.

Development and Device Management

For rapid application development, Intermec provides development libraries for .Net and Java on Microsoft operation systems. Developer s simply write the application once and have the capability to port it over to different RFID devices such as Intermec mobile and vehicle mount computers. Intermec SmartSystem Foundation, a remote management system, comes standard on the IF5. An intuitive administrator’s console provides centralized access to remote devices like the IF5 reader. Administrators can change device settings, send OS upgrades, update software applications, and execute other changes directly from the console to save time and significantly cut costs.

Ethernet and WiFi

The IF5 comes standard with an internal auto-range power supply, IPv4 and IPv6 plus an optional 802.11b/g CCX certified radio enabling seamless integration into existing Ethernet or WiFi infrastructures. The IF5 is straightforward to integrate and capable of continuous operation anywhere in the world.

Deployment Services

IF4 Fixed RFID Reader

Joining a diversified line of RFID readers, the Intermec® IF4 serial reader is the ideal RFID peripheral for applications where an edge server or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is used for process control. The IF4 reduces the communications burden on the network and processing demand on the host PLC.

While reading and writing RFID labels and tags, the IF4 uses an air-interface protocol for filtering out unneeded tag data caused by multiple reads and tags not required for the application. General purpose input/output (I/O) circuitry enables the IF4 to monitor and/or control peripheral devices while keeping the cost of ancillary equipment and installation down.

After the IF4 controls the selection of appropriate tags for reading, it then combines its pre-configured application parameters with the information from the selected tags in order to activate external sensors as well as control audible and visual indicators.
